As an IT company that leads the digitalization of dozens of public agencies in the South Tyrol province of Italy, SIAG needed a comprehensive platform that could tackle accessibility, analytics, SEO, and quality assurance — and support content production and management in multiple languages. Siteimprove met all their needs in one fell swoop.

The problem

For years, SIAG struggled with wide-ranging issues that touched on the digitization of public administration for agencies across the region. Issues ranged from confusion about who was responsible for digital accessibility to a laborious and error-prone content management system: Text was checked manually, and misspellings were common — an issue compounded by the fact that many sites are published in German, Italian, and Ladin, a regional language. Sites were also rife with broken links that sat unidentified and unattended to.

Moreover, sites produced and managed by SIAG faced problems like irrelevant and insecure links, outdated content, and unoptimized URLs, meta titles, and meta descriptions. Consistent SEO was an ongoing issue.

To top it off, SIAG needed to migrate its content from an obsolete CMS to a headless CMS, so they needed a comprehensive solution that could support that transition.

"Providing a high quality, multilingual and inclusive digital communication system for citizens is complex. It requires innovative technological support and strong web content expertise, as well as reliable partners like Siteimprove."

The solve

Starting in 2018, SIAG relied on Siteimprove’s Quality Assurance tool for all their sites within the province. Dashboards and reports for each site divided pages by language, and coupled with training focused on best practices, page quality improved. It also become much faster to identify issues and resolve them, and provincial employees responsible for the content appreciated the difference.

SIAG quickly moved on to tackle the overall performance of the web pages. Training on dashboards helped content experts who had little experience with analytics become comfortable with leveraging data to improve the experience of web visitors. With Siteimprove Performance, SIAG could also immediately detect and resolve issues that could slow down their sites.

From there, SIAG could turn their attention to SEO: With SEO Advanced and personalized dashboards and widgets, they could attend to page structure and optimize URLs, meta titles, and meta descriptions. “Thanks to the dynamic capabilities that Siteimprove offers, often overlooked elements in public websites like these have been improved,” says Carlo Mulas, who has headed up the implementation of Siteimprove.

Automated scans of websites’ digital accessibility and AI-driven suggestions for fixes also lightened the load for SIAG; the ability to assign issues by role and expertise helped distribute tasks among team members. Compliance with both EU and Italian accessibility laws has been much easier for SIAG’s clients since unleashing Siteimprove’s Accessibility tools and has touched the work of developers, designers, graphic artists, and content experts. Full compliance audits happen quickly and penetrate deeply into the CMS.

Finally, the process of migration has been simplified with Siteimprove. Each migration starts with data that sheds light on the relevance of pages and creates better information architecture — one that’s both logical and aligned with the real needs and behaviors of users.

The results:

  • 85% reduction of broken links
  • 50% decrease in issue remediation time
  • 93% Quality Assurance score
